Many learners tell me, “I understand English, but I freeze when I try to speak.” They also say things like, “I just can’t find my words,” or “I get blocked.”
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone and it’s not your fault. Confidence doesn’t come from memorising grammar rules. It comes from using English in real, supportive conversations.
After over 20 years of teaching English in schools, companies, and online, I’ve seen what truly helps people break through the fear and start speaking naturally.
Here’s how to make that shift.
1. Speak with real people — not just apps
Apps are great for vocabulary and grammar, but they won’t give you spontaneous interaction — the kind that builds true fluency.
Practise speaking with someone who can respond, guide you, and offer gentle corrections. Ideally, a native-speaking teacher who understands your learning goals.
2. Stop translating in your head
One of the biggest blocks to fluency is trying to translate every sentence from your native language. Instead, start learning phrases and expressions in English. This helps you think in English and respond more naturally.
Example:
Instead of remembering five separate words for 'I’m running late', just learn the full phrase:
“Sorry, I’m running a bit late — I’ll be there soon.”
3. Make mistakes — that’s how you grow
Perfectionism kills confidence. If you wait to speak until every sentence is 'correct', you’ll stay stuck.
Mistakes are not a problem — they’re a necessary part of learning. The key is having a teacher who makes you feel safe to try, not judged.
And remember: “Sorry” isn’t a word you need every time you make a mistake in English.
Making mistakes is normal — it means you’re learning, practising, and improving. You don’t need to apologise for speaking a new language.
4. Practise little and often
Confidence doesn’t come from two-hour grammar marathons once a month. It comes from consistent, short, focused practice.
Even 15–20 minutes of speaking, three or four times a week, can make a big difference.
5. Choose a teacher who listens to you
Your lessons should fit your needs, not a one-size-fits-all textbook.
A good teacher will tailor the material to your goals, whether it’s business English, exam prep, or everyday conversation, and help you build confidence step by step.
